Who are these people?
This group is evolving quickly. It began as an idea and has grown
quickly to attract people from all sorts of backgrounds and ages.
Our supporters include business people, musicians, charity and
community leaders, students, politicians, people from every corner
of Newfoundland and Labrador society. Blue-collar, white-collar,
no-collar. At our core, we all share two common traits: (1) We
love a great party, and (2) we believe that this festival could be a
great legacy for our city and province.
We have a dream of what could be. We see our
main role as promoting the idea and getting enough support to
make it an attractive idea
to those who might want to produce this event. We seek to build
visible public support.
We did not start
this with the intention of raising money or spending other
people's money - we will be happy with any promoter who wants to
run with this idea - so long as they also want a festival for
the whole community. A festival that will give great
opportunities to local tourism, charities, and any business that
wants to participate is welcomed. The model we propose would
allow any group to stage their own event as a part of the
festival or help sponsor another event on a different night or
at a different venue. We would hope that a sponsor or event
promoter would see the potential for a festival that tries to
bring the whole community on-board. A festival that is larger by
being inclusive, by encouraging the smaller stages and parties
to offer up not just a little of the festival flavour - but also
a showcase for variety.
We hope to encourage organizers to keep spaces
and co-operative opportunities for charity at the forefront.
Allowing a flexible and direct way for charities to participate
in the festival for their own fund-raising or publicity goals.
We ask nothing more from our supporters than they indicate
that they would love to attend this sort of festival, and to
pass on the word to their friends.
We offer an affiliated
group for volunteers - people who may have the time to get
involved in making contacts, brain-storming, promoting the
concept, perhaps with an eye to eventually sitting on a board of
directors if we ever do make the jump to organizing and
promoting our own festhall. If you have connections, passing the
word along to people who might contribute would be great.
- If you have skills, offering them up for networking, promoting,
marketing, or research.
- If you are a musician, then perhaps you would be interested in keeping
your finger on the pulse of the event?
Perhaps you'd like to help put together your own Oktoberfest band
for fun?
- Maybe as an entertainer or artist, you see your role as doing
promos, posters, or just quietly giving back to the
community in a fun way? Perhaps helping out with a documentary
or short promotional video for You Tube
to help us sell the idea? Maybe you see a role in creating a mascot?
Staging publicity events?
- If you are a student or learning skills that you want to practice for a
resume - we can give you that chance.
- If you are a club manager - perhaps you see potential to involve your
business on the ground floor?
Why support a Rock-toberfest: Oktoberfest on the Rock?
The most important reason is that a large group
offering public support will offer us some input on how the
event takes shape. If we can show sponsors that we have 2,000 or
more supporters for this sort of event, then we can pretty much
offer a ready crowd to attend a center-piece event. That would
be attractive to a promoter. It might also be a draw for bigger
names to headline a concert stage. A large support group might
be incentive to a brewery to launch new products in this market.
It makes the idea of selling Newfoundland as a Fall tourist
destination a little more attractive to people elsewhere. It
opens the door to establishing an official group with the clout
to suggest standards for a quality event that will become an
annual event - rather than a hodgepodge of competing interests.
Just saying that you'd like to attend this sort of event could be enough
to make it happen and happen sooner!
